The Flute Studio at Indiana State University is a friendly, supportive environment where students are challenged to reach their full potential as they prepare for careers as music teachers and performers and in music business.  Flutists have ample performance opportunities, both as soloists and in chamber and large ensembles.  The studio sponsors guest artists and has master classes and two studio recitals each semester.

Current students:Ricardo with Wibb

  • Won the ISU Concerto Competition
  • Were chosen by audition to perform on the ISU Contemporary Music Festival Student Recital and ISU President’s Concert (as a result of being the top woodwind performer at juries)
  • Performed in master classes for internationally-acclaimed flutists Sir James Galway and William Bennett
  • Won regional, national and international competitions
  • Performed at the National Flute Association Convention
  • Hold leadership positions at ISU, including Drum Major for the Marching Sycamores and President of Kappa Kappa Psi
  • Teach in the ISU Community School for the Arts
  • Studied in Sydney, Australia as part of the ISU Study Abroad Program
  • Participate in the ISU Honors Program for academic excellence

The School of Music at ISU offers all the opportunities of a large school, while providing small class sizes, lots of personal attention and a family atmosphere.  Prospective students are always invited to visit campus to tour our facilities, meet students and faculty and have a complimentary lesson with Dr. Mattern.  She is also available to give master classes in public schools.  To set up a lesson or class with Dr. Mattern, click here.

Flutists at ISU have the opportunity to perform in a wide variety of ensembles, including the Wind Orchestra, Wind Symphony, Concert Band, Marching Band, Basketball Band and University Symphony Orchestra, as well as various chamber ensembles.  For more information about the ISU Bands, click here.  To learn more about the University Symphony, click here.
