Meet the Students

Mary (2)

Mary Abernathy is a freshman from Seymour, Indiana majoring in music education. She plays flute in the Wind Symphony, Marching Sycamores and Basketball Band and is part of the university’s Honors Program. What Mary likes best about being a student at ISU is all the opportunities the music program has to offer.

 

 

Olivia (2)Olivia Ayon is a sophomore music education major from Hammond, Indiana. She is a member of Kappa Kappa Psi, a Resident Assistant in Cromwell Hall for first-year education majors and a flute instructor in ISU’s Community School for the Arts. Olivia was chosen by audition to perform on the Student Recital for the 2017 ISU Contemporary Music Festival.  What she likes best about being a student at ISU is getting to help freshman have a great first year experience.

 

Katy

Katy Burger is a junior Music Education major and honors student from Knox, Indiana. While at ISU, Katy has participated in Wind Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Band, Marching Sycamores, Basketball Band, Concert Band and Flute Choir. She is a member of the National Association for Music Education and the honorary band fraternity Kappa Kappa Psi, where she currently serves as President. In addition, Katy is in her second year as Drum Major for the ISU Marching Sycamores. In her free time, Katy enjoys spending time with her niece and nephew, going on adventures with her friends and cheering on the Chicago Cubs. Katy’s favorite aspect of ISU is the friends that have become family a long way from home.

Zachery Davis is a 5th-year student from Everett, Pennsylvania with a double major in anthropology and music liberal arts. He is an honors student at ISU, writer at the Indiana Statesman and an oboe instructor with ISU’s Community School of the Arts. Zachery was chosen by audition to perform on the Student Recital at the 2017 ISU Contemporary Music Festival.  What he likes best about being an ISU student is the abundance of resources available, from the library and friendly faculty, to counseling and the variety of student organizations.

 

Ricardo (2)

Ricardo Gil is a junior music performance major from La Romana, Dominican Republic.

He was selected for the ISU President’s Concert in 2016, 2017 and 2018, the ISU Contemporary Music Festival Student Recital and the Intercollegiate Honor Band, and was a winner of the 2016 ISU Concerto/Aria Competition. Ricardo was also the First Prize winner in the Art of Woodwinds and Brass International Competition and the First Prize Winner in the ‘Vienna’ Grand Prize Virtuoso International Music Competition. As a result, he performed at the Awards Ceremony at Gläserner Saal, Musikverein in Vienna, Austria. He was the Indiana winner of the MTNA Young Artist Woodwind Competition, was chosen as one of the three winners of the William Bennett masterclass at the 2017 Indy Flute Fest and was a winner of the National Flute Association Collegiate Flute Choir Competition in 2016 and 2017. Ricardo was one of the 8 flutists chosen by audition to perform for William Bennett at the Pre-Convention Masterclass at the 2017 NFA convention. He was also sponsored by Straubinger Flutes to participate in the Galway Flute Festival held in Switzerland in July 2017 and is the winner of a full scholarship to attend the Galway Flute Festival 2018.

Active in the Associated Board Royal School of Music diplomas program; past achievements include completion with distinction of grade IV and V in theory and grade VI in instrumental-flute. In 2014, he was selected to participate in masterclasses, rehearsals, and performances in Winchester, England with Master Clinicians Wissam Boustany, Lucille Burns, and Karen Wills. He has also performed for Claudio Barile, principal flutist of the Buenos Aires Philharmonic.

Ricardo was invited by the Dominican Wind Orchestra to perform as a soloist in 2014 and 2016. His academic awards include Pi Kappa Lambda, The National Music Honor Society and the Outstanding Underclassman Award for Musical Excellence from the Wind Orchestra, as well as recognition by the University for academic excellence.

 

Maddy

Madelyn Potucek is a junior music education major from St. John, Indiana. During her time at ISU, she has been a member of the Wind Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra, Marching Sycamores, Flute Choir and Basketball Band. Madelyn is a member of the National Association for Music Education and is a membership support specialist for the Girl Scouts organization. Her favorite things about being a student at ISU are the beautiful campus and the friendships she has made.

 

Carlee (2)

Carlee Schlatter is a junior music education major at ISU. She is from Reelsville, Indiana and is a 2015 South Putnam high school graduate. In her college career, she has been a member of the ISU Wind Symphony, Symphony Orchestra, Flute Choir, Basketball Band and Marching Sycamores. She is also an active member of the professional fraternity Kappa Kappa Psi and has previously served as the Recording Secretary and Historian. She currently holds the position of Vice President of Membership for the fraternity. Carlee is also a flute instructor for the ISU Community School of the Arts. She is proud to be a Sycamore and loves the camaraderie between students at ISU.

 

Whitney (2)Whitney Slaton is a sophomore music education major from Terre Haute, Indiana. In the fall semester of 2017, she studied at the University of Sydney in Sydney, Australia through ISU’s Study Abroad program. Whitney has participated in Marching Band, Basketball Band, Wind Symphony and Flute Choir. She is a member of Kappa Kappa Psi and a writer for the Indiana Statesman. Her favorite thing about being a student at ISU is all the opportunities throughout campus that allow students to participate in many different programs and activities.
